Popcorn Words

We refer to sight words in our classroom as popcorn words.  We call them popcorn words because they "pop up" everywhere.  We do lots of activities throughout the year to help them master these words.  I recently purchased Heidi's Sing and Spell Sight Words DVDs so I am really excited about using them in the classroom.  My kids love her alphabet, numbers, and shapes songs so I'm sure her sight word songs will be no different.  Click the image below if you are interested in purchasing her CD or DVDs.  You can also check out her blog by clicking here.

We also play lots of games with our words in whole group such as monsters and babies or cowboys and chickens.  In order to play these games I have made a PowerPoint with all of our popcorn words.  Mixed in among the words are pictures of monsters and babies.  When the monster pops up the kids roar like a monster and when they see the baby they cry like one.  They LOVE this game and it keeps them really engaged!  Cowboys and chickens is the same concept except they say "Yeehaw" when they see a cowboy and they "bawk" when they see a chicken.  I believe these ideas came from Kim Adsit but I can't remember!  Click here to visit her website and here to check out her blog!

Leave a comment and let me know how you teach "popcorn words"!

If you're interested in some activities to use during word work check out my new Popcorn Words Unit!  This is the first of several units I will be doing on popcorn words.  It includes 12 weeks of flashcards, word work and assessments.  I have also included popcorn word wall headers with kernels for each of the 30 words in the packet.  Click the image below to visit my TPT store and check it out!

Sorry I didn't get a chance to post about my Dollar Tree finds!  I forgot to take pictures but thanks to my friend Hillarie I was able to grab some Halloween Scentos markers!  I also saw them today at Wal-Mart so if you are Scentos fan then go check them out!
