Dental Health Fun!

We had a BLAST with our dental health unit this past week!  Let's get right to it!

On Monday we showed the kids eggs that had been soaked overnight in soda.  This is what they looked like.

We talked about how it's important to limit our intake of sodas, coffee and tea and brush our teeth every day so we do not stain our teeth like this egg!  We then gave each table an egg and toothbrushes.

We put some toothpaste on each of their brushes and let them go to work!

They had such a great time brushing off the stains.  Just remember to use hard-boiled eggs for this experiment or else it could get messy!

Here are is a look at one of the eggs when they were finished.

To close out the lesson on Monday, we had a little discussion about plaque and then dropped one of our eggs in a jar of vinegar.  We discussed how the egg was like our tooth and the vinegar was like the plaque that sticks to our teeth.  The kids made predictions about what they thought the "plaque" would do to the "tooth".

*We used both hard-boiled and raw eggs for this experiment and the raw eggs definitely worked best.*

When we checked our eggs the following day, this is what we saw.

It's hard to tell from the picture but the shell had been eaten away and the egg was very soft and transparent in some areas.  We passed the eggs around for the kids to feel and observe the effects.  They then added their conclusions to their recording sheet from the day before.

We decided it was really important for us to brush our teeth every day so our teeth don't end up like the egg!  We then gave each kid their own mouth, a toothbrush, and some white paint as toothpaste.  They were able to practice brushing their teeth.

The next day we read Gregory, the Terrible Eater and sorted pictures based on whether they were healthy foods or non-healthy foods.  I stepped out to complete an observation so I wasn't able to snap any pictures of the activity put here is an example of what it looks like.

If you are interested in any of these activities you can find them in my Dental Health packet on TPT.  Click the image below to check it out!

100th Day and Valentine Centers!

We had a very BUSY week this week!  Monday was our 100th Day and we had a blast celebrating with our sweet kiddos.  We also learned about dental health and added in some new Valentine-themed centers.  I had originally planned to do it all in one BIG post but it was WAY too much so I'll save our dental health fun for tomorrow!

Like I said, Monday was our 100th Day!  We dressed up like we were 100 years old and even pushed one of our teachers around in a wheelchair!  I don't know how we managed to go all day and NOT get a picture of us all together!  We even had some our of little ones dress up too and they were precious!

We started off Monday by making our 100 Days Smarter crowns.  Each kid got 10 strips and a page of stickers.  They had to put one sticker in each box until they filled up each page.

They then had to cut out their 10 strips and glue them onto their sentence strip.

Then they added their star to the front of their crown.

We then stapled the ends of the sentence strip and pulled all of their strips together and stapled them at the top.  The finished product is shown below!

After our crowns were complete, we got busy making our 100th Day Snack Mix!

The kids used their hundreds chart to help make sure they only took 10 pieces of each snack.  Once their hundreds chart was full they transferred the snack items to a Ziploc bag to enjoy!  You can also see their recording sheet where they wrote 10 next to each snack item to make sure they didn't miss any!

Our math curriculum has us celebrating counting to 100 for the entire week so here are some of the other activities we did throughout the week.

Our Book of 100 Things
Each book had 10 different "scenarios" where the kids had to draw 10 pictures.  Here are just a few of the pages they had to complete.

100 Toppings on a Pizza

100 Gumballs

100 Animals in the Mitten

100 Bugs in a Jar

Skip Counting Scoops

We did lots of writing activities too but I  forgot to snap pictures!  You can find most of these activities in my 100th Day packet on TPT.  Click the image below to check it out!

Now on to our Valentine-themed stations!  We'll start with our Literacy Centers.  We use Daily 5 in our classroom so all of the stations you see are a part of my Work on Words choice.

In this center, the kids choose a cupid card and read the picture in the box.  They then have to use the letter tiles to spell out the word and record it on their recording sheet.

In this station, the kids are matching the key to the correct heart by rhyming words.  They then record their rhymes on their recording sheet.

Here the kids are identifying the final sound of the word, recording it on their recording sheet and coloring the lips to match.

In this center, this kids choose a card, read the word and then sound it out and spell it on their recording sheet.  They then color the heart to match.

Math Centers

Here the kids have a paper bag with different Valentine cards (either princess or superhero).  They pull out 10 cards from the bag and record their combinations on their recording sheet.

In this station, the kids draw a cookie card and read the number.  They then have to record the number that comes before and after that number on their recording sheet and color the cookie to match.

In this buddy game station, the kids are racing their partner to fill their chocolate box with candy.  They roll the dice and cover that number, the first person to fill their box is the winner!

In this spin-a-graph station, the kids are spinning and recording the data on their recording sheet.  They then transfer that information on to their graph.  I then ask them questions about their graph so they are analyzing their data (Which had more? Less?  How many more did ____ have than ____?, etc.)
If you're interested in any of these centers you can find them in my Lovey Dovey Valentine's Day pack on TPT! Click either image below to check it out!

I'll be back tomorrow with a post on all of our dental health fun!!
