Procedural Writing

We started our procedural writing unit today. Not gonna lie....I was really nervous!  This year has been beyond crazy for our class.  We started with 27 then went to 12 then went back to 26 then down to 24 and now back to 12.  I feel like I lost so much time in the beginning and we've been playing catch up ever since.  Writing has been a frustration for me this year.  I just felt like I was modeling, conferencing and goal-setting to death and we just weren't getting anywhere...and then today happened.  I had noticed quite an improvement in their writing after we returned from break.  However, this was a completely new unit and I just was very unsure of how it all was going to work.

We started with the mentor text "Charlie Needs a Cloak" by Tomie dePaola.  We talked about how they can be teachers and teach others how to do something through their writing.  I modeled a very simple activity we do every day during Daily 5 (Read to Self).  I started by drawing the three steps (Get your book box, pick a book, read the book) and then added words to help my reader better understand my writing.  Then it was their turn to try it out.

I was so proud of how they applied their new learning!  There were How-To's on riding a bike, writing in your journal, and my favorite...."How to Learn"...just to name a few!  Love it!  Here's one I snapped a picture of...

We've been using Deanna Jump's and Deedee Wills' writing lessons and I love them.  So user friendly!  If you do not own these and you're looking for great, all-inclusive writing lessons then you definitely need to check these out!

I'll be back later this week with a post on our measurement unit!  Have a terrific Tuesday!
